A Tribute to My Grandmother
Dear Grandma, I can still smell your aura at times when I just sit and be still. I can vividly remember you chasing me and my cousins up the stairs as we ate from Uncle’s candy jar and jumped on the bed. Not a care in the world because when in your presence everything seemed so safe, so untouched, so together! You gave us the most important gift- it was you, your undivided attention and affirmations of love and protection. As we stood on the stool and greased your hair a hundred times a day- you never seemed to have a head full of grease. It was because you had the Grandma magic, to do the unthinkable in the blink of an eye. Oh! how I miss how well dressed you were even to sit at home and talk on the telephone- I can remember the silk blouse with the large bow at the neckline as you had the telephone pressed against your ear- you made even a wanderer feel of value! I am often reminded of that grace and pure essence of a woman, to listen before speaking and to stay ready so you don’t have to get ready. I am so grateful for you- oh how I wish you could be here to see me Mother, to see me as a wife and a woman of virute- all grown up yet still free enough to jump on the bed and scream like a teenager attending their first concert! As I continue on this journey of Motherhood, I rely on the strength of you, of infinite wisdom and choosing fact over fiction. Somehow, the Enterman’s Crunch Cake has never tasted as good to me as when you cut the first slice- must have been a dose of love you sprinkled with each stroke of the knife. Until we see each other again, I send a heart of gratefulness to lay with you as you slumber. With love Grandma from your Granddaughter! Apart but never not celebrated- Happy Birthday Grandma!
